Domain & Hosting

  • Registration:
    try to use keywords (1 hyphen) in your domain name, it ranks your website slightly higher.
  • Multiple Registration:
    register your top keyword phrases as domain names, and use domain pointers to redirect
    visitors to your website.
  • Owning Multiple Domains: use their subdomains to point to your website.
  • Multiple Cross-linked Sites: host each site on a different Class C block (i.e. separate hosts)
  • Changing Domain Name:
    If you must change domain names, insert a “Permanent 301 Redirect” script on that server to
    state that the old domain has been replaced with a new one. This also transfers PR.

Keyword Phrases

  • Brainstorm and make a list of all words that any kind of user might use to find your site
  • Use online keyword research tools, and get the list of words (3, 4 and 5-word phrases)
  • List your “Primary Keyword Phrase”, “Primary Keyword Variations”, “Specific Phrases (includes PKP)” and “Secondary Keyword Phrase”

Content Editing and Management

  • Theme of your website = Primary Keyword Phrase (PKP)
  • Use Keywords in the first 20 words of each first <p>, and in the last <p>(avoid page identity)
  • Optimize pages with the Primary Keyword Phrase and a Secondary Keyword Phrase
  • PKP specific variations according to content
  • PKP only for pages similar to (About Us, Contact Us, FAQ,…etc)
  • Special emphasis on the use of your PKP in the Home page
  • Separate content onto many different pages by topic (keyword phrase) of at least 200 words.
  • Publish your website ASAP! Even before completion

On-Page HTML Procedures (Page Relevance):

  • Don’t nest the file structure too deeply (All pages should live in the same folder as the homes)
  • Naming files: use keywords with max of 1 hyphen (pages, images, folders…etc)
    [Changing the file names of your site will place it in the GoogleSandbox again]
  • Keyworded semantic HTML (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>, <a>, <strong>, <em>, <alt>, <option>… etc)
  • No Frames, No Flash in the Homepage, Fewer inline JavaScript code chunks,
  • The <title> tags [Important!]:
    <title> tage is the first element after the <head> tag
    Fill with “smart” meaningful Keyworded lines 9 words or 60 chars
    Start the title of Home page with PKP and best SKP
    Include PKP in every title if possible
    Do not include your company name (if must, put it at the end)
    Each page-title should be unique
  • Use <strong> and <em> in the first <p> of the page
  • Create sitemap.html with some content (no need for it if website is relatively small)
  • On-page Linking & the <a> tags
    Use only text <a> links when possible, try avoiding image links
    Hierarchical linking:
    “Garage plan” pages link only to other “Garage plan” pages
    No outgoing links from the Home! only from the “Related Links” page
    Non-relevant pages (e.g. About Us, FAQ,…etc) should link back to the Home
    No “orphan pages”, every page must link to at least one other page
    Use Absolute URLs for linking to the Home page (i.e. “http://www.yourdomain.com“)
    Bread Crumb (Tree links)
    Use rel=“NOFOLLOW” in all outgoing links
    Create a “Related Links” page with content and described-links (only of relevant content)
    Create a “Link to Us” code : <a href=”http://www.ghadanfar.com“>Islamic Web Design </a>
    Link out to “Authoritative” sites and professional organization website, for your topic
    Footer link only in some pages (avoid ROS links)
  • META Description is 160 chars of your best sales pitch, make them want to click your listing!
  • HTACCESS
    Substitute your dynamic URL with a static one using a .htaccess file (mod rewrite)
    Use .htaccess (for 301 Redirect) to make all links point to one version of your site (with/out “www”)
  • In case you have some PDFs, create robot.txt to exclude them from crawling.

Off-Page Procedures (Page Importance):

  • Searching and listing nominated linking-pages (via Google, Yahoo and ODP)
    1. Search for your most important keywords, top 30 sites can be complementary to yours
    2. Determine which sites link to you using the Yahoo backlink command:
      linkdomain:www.YourDomain -site:www.YourDomain3.
    3. Similarly, determine which sites link to your competitors, they should link to you as well
    4. List all the nominated sites in a spreadsheet and mention which sites you have already contacted, which site added your link, whether you have added a link to their site…etc
  • Site Rating for Linking
    1. Using Google, check:
      If the linking-page is indexed in Google Links should be displayed in the cached version of the page
    2. View Source of the page, check:
      • No JavaScript links
      • No link redirection
      • No NOFOLLOW link attribute
      • No META NOINDEX
    3. Using SEO Elite, check
      • PageRank of the linkin-page
      • Alexa traffic rating of the site (lower nu,bers are better)
      • How many backlinks the site has
      • Links are few and are in the same general category as yours (few ads too)
    4. Right before adding the link, check if the page allows to use your keywords
  • Link-building:
    1. One-way links
      a. Create 3 to 5 different variations of your link-text, don’t always use the same link-text
      b. Search directories (Free)
      i. ODP
      Sign up to be an Editor for a particular topic
      Submit your site for the appropriate topic page once
      Submit your site again for a location-specific page once
      Check your site’s PR on directory.google.com (based on ODP)
      ii. Yahoo!
      If your site is non-business or non-profit, you can still get listed for free
      Complete your site 100% before listing it
      iii. About.com: email the “Guide” of the topic first (look for “Suggest a link”)
      iv. Find industry-specific directories in Google “YourKeyword + submit site”
      or on http://www.isebd.com/html/web_directories/specialty_directoriesc. Publish Articles (use your link as a signature)
      i. Create at least a one-page article about a service or product that you offer
      ii. Post short articles and useful content on Blogs, Forums and Newsgroupsd. Write online press releases (PRWeb.comPRLeap.comPress-World.com, …etc.)
      e. Donate to Non-profit Organizations, they will add a link to your site (guidestar.org)
      f. Renting (if you can afford it)
      i. www.text-link-ads.com
      ii. www.textlinkbrokers.com
      g. Avoid Free-For-All (FFA) sites and link farms
    2. Reciprocal links (two-ways links)
      • If you own/manage a few sites, don’t cross-link or triangular-link them together (it’s a red flag!)
      • Pair down a list of sites linking to yours and ask them to change the links to your keywords
      • Add to the list sites linking to your competitors’ sites, arrange them by the following priorities:
        High PR then low PR
        Context-relevant only
        Getting a link on a page as close to the home as possible
      • Obtain the email address of each website owner (Contact Us, Whois or SEO Elite)
      • Link to their site first
      • Create a dedicated email account (e.g. partners@YourDomain.com)
      • Make the Subject line concise: “MySite.com now links to YourSite.com
      • Make it personal (show that you actually visited their site), and keep it brief
      • Don’t threaten. Don’t bug people with follow-ups (send one email 2 weeks later only)

Competition Winning Procedures

  1. How Much Competition Do you Really Have?
    To get an accureate number of other sites that are optimizing their pages for a given search term, open Google and follow these steps using your keyword phrase:
    1. Type: allintitle: “your keyword phrase”
    2. Type: allinanchor: “your keyword phrase”
    3. Type: allinurl: “your keyword phrase”
    4. Type: intitle:“keyword” inanchor:“keyword” inurl:“keyword”
      (to see sites that do all 3 things together)
  2. Reverse-Engineer Your Competition
    a. Find every site that links back to the top 3 sites in Google of your chosen keyword
    (using SEO Elite/Yahoo’s backlink command)
    b. Obtain links from those exact sites that your competitors are getting links from
    c. Use the same anchor text and try to duplicate the percentage of anchor text variations
    d. Look at the page titles of the #1 site and duplicate them for your most important pages

Website Monitoring (Google Analytics) & Linking Follow Up

  1. Spend at least 1 hour a week on off-page linking procedures for your site
  2. Monitoring your website is a MUST-DO activity, check the following:
    • Traffic Stats
    • Typed Keywords
    • Search Engines
    • Referrals (sites bringing traffic)
    • Favicon Bookmark Traffic
    • Page Views
    • Click/Visitor Path
    • Exit Page
    • Length of Session
    • Site Ranking
    • Number of Indexed Pages: site:www.YourDomain www.Yourdomain
    • Number Incoming Links: linkdomain:www.YourDomain -site:www.YourDomain
    • Reciprocal links should be no more than 50% of your backlinks
    • Try to get 20 links each week
